Uses

The M1 Shruti Box is a versatile musical instrument that can be played by anyone and works well with a range of musical styles. Singers use it as an accompaniment for song, chanting and improvisation. Instrumental musicians use it to provide sustained drones to play over. Voice coaches find it helpful for encouraging people with low confidence to sing and express themselves more freely. Educators find it useful for demonstrating musical basics such as notes, chords and harmony. Storytellers use it to create enchanting backgrounds for their narrative. Music therapists use it to create a relaxed mood and to support vocal expression.

Acclaimed Scottish singer-songwriter Karine Polwart uses a C tuned instrument to compose and perform with. Palestinian singer, Womad artist and BBC radio presenter Reem Kelani uses C and Low G models in concert and in voice workshops with children: the M1 gives her useful portability and provides a drone over which she can demonstrate the subtle nuances of Arabic music. New York-based musician Don Conreaux uses the M1 as a basis for group musical improvisation. Guitarist, Lee Holland from Nashville uses the M1 to create backgrounds for his contemporary songs.
